Today I dealt with a real Spy vs. Spy scenario…
In this corner: McAfee Security Center, preinstalled on a new PC
And in the opposing corner: McAfee Total Protection, a forced install on our business network
Who wins? No one!
Who loses? Me, of course! I lose hours of time, brain cells, sense and sensibility, and other items I’ll never get back. The two AVs were fighting each other, rather successfully I might add, until Vista (hah!) decided it was time for an update and grabbed some junk from MS. The person using this pc – trusty Nato – dutifully updated his pc, only to find that now the AVs could no longer bear the sight of each other.
Multiple uninstalls and installs later, we are at the same impass. But heck, I’ll just call tech support… should I call McAfee (the AV maker), or SonicWall (the firewall maker where our AV comes down from), or Microsoft (bite your tongue!)? Here’s what I predict each one will say: “you need to call (insert other guilty party here) instead…”
Which gets me back to Spy vs. Spy. Did you ever know which one was *supposed* to be the crowd favorite? I guess it was the white Spy, but that seems stereotypical, lame and potentially a bit racist. If I were to think that deeply about Spy vs. Spy.
Or, unless the enemy hasn’t studied his Agrippa.
Which I have!
